California is one of the most populated states in the country, and further growth, particularly in the central valley and Mojave areas, is expected. To maintain this growth and to protect the environment and communities in which we live, it's important we collectively work to find alternative energy sources to traditional fossil fuels.
Terra-Gen is leading the way in doing just that. Through the Alta Wind Energy Center (AWEC) and other Terra-Gen Power wind energy projects, we are reducing California's carbon foot print, while providing clean, renewable energy to thousands of residences.
Below are some of the benefits the AWEC brings to the region. The AWEC will:
- Extend Kern County's renewable energy leadership position
- Extend Kern County's leadership position in meeting California's substantial renewable energy needs
- Increase California wind energy jobs by 20%
- Provide a substantial economic impact to Kern County
- Contribute $1.2 billion to the local economy via property taxes, landowner payments, procurements of goods and services and labor over the project's operating life
- Bring an estimated 50 full-time jobs to Mojave and an estimated 300 short-term construction jobs to Mojave
- Protect local resources
- Reduce emissions by more than 52 million metric tons
- Reduce 888 million gallons of water use annually compared to other forms of energy generation
- Represent a significant project for generation of California's present and future renewable energy
- Provide electricity to 275,000 homes
- Upon completion, the Project would represent 10 percent of the renewable power purchases required for California's regulated utilities
